In 2010 , when Gilenya, a drug manufactured by Novartis, received FDA approval, the cost of the medication per month was set at $4,000 per month. The cost of that medication is nothing compared to the annual cost of Tecfidera, which is $62,000 per year.

According to Daniel Kantor, M.D., president of the Florida Society of Neurology, “MS DMDs are too expensive. This is almost universally recognized. The problem is that they keep increasing in price. In the U.S., the vast majority of people with MS get their DMDs at a very low price to them because of patient assistance programs. Sometimes, however, even when we try very hard we can’t get the medications at an affordable price. This is especially true for…the working under-insured and people on state and federal insurance plans.”

Alternatives to MS Medication

Though, the good news is there is another method a person who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis can take in order to find relief from their symptoms. The key is to understand that there is a connection between a trauma to either the head or neck and multiple sclerosis.

For years, upper cervical chiropractors have used this specific and gentle method of chiropractic called upper cervical care to realign the top two bones in the vertebrae. A misalignment in those two bones of only ¼ of a millimeter can place enough pressure on the brainstem to hinder communication between the brain and the body, and that can lead to various health problems including some cases of Multiple Sclerosis.

Though, the good news is an upper cervical chiropractor can examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments that may be the underlying cause of your MS symptoms. They will then make the necessary adjustments to your upper neck vertebrae in order to align those top two bones, so your body can begin to heal itself.
