Migraines – Can Mint Help?

If you suffer from migraines, you know that they can affect your personal life and your career. One 2012 survey performed by the US government revealed that about 14% of US citizens have had either a migraine or a different type of serious headache within the past three months. These painful experiences affect individuals and take their toll on entire families even if just one member is afflicted.

The Wall Street Journal published an article based on a study in which peppermint oil was considered as a treatment option for headaches and migraines. In the study, the oil was applied to the temples and forehead as a form of treatment.

For some, the treatment proved effective. Plus, there were fewer side effects such as the rebound headaches that are common with over-the-counter pain relievers. On the negative side, however, some migraine sufferers actually experience an attack when encountering a strong smell, and it is tough to find a stronger fragrance than pure peppermint oil. Also, if one experiences sensitivity to smell as a part of a migraine attack, the peppermint can quickly become overbearing.

Another Natural Treatment Option

So peppermint seems to be a good solution for some but not all, which is a common factor in migraine treatment. Another option you may wish to look into that is natural and has no side effects is upper cervical chiropractic care.  At Schrier Family Chiropractic, we use the NUCCA technique to identify and correct the upper cervical misalignments that cause migraines and headaches for many people.

When the uppermost vertebrae become misaligned, this interrupts normal central nervous system function. The brainstem, blood vessels, and surrounding tissue all suffer from increased pressure. Migraines and headaches can result. Many find that correcting the misalignment reduces the frequency of migraines or even eliminates them entirely.
