Natural Relief of Vertigo Caused by Meniere’s Disease

Someone who suffers from Meniere’s disease will usually tell you that it is not an easy condition to deal with.  Episodes of extreme vertigo, ringing in the ears, and hearing loss can come on very suddenly, which can be anxiety provoking.  Symptoms might go into remission for a period of time, then come back unexpectedly.

Meniere’s disease is caused by a buildup of excess fluid within the canals of the inner ear.  The exact reason for this fluid buildup remains somewhat of a mystery, but proposed theories include improper drainage of the ear, viral infection, abnormal immune system response, or a result of a prior injury to the head.  Treatment options are usually limited to medications or therapies that address the individual symptoms rather that trying to uncover the potential cause.

The Cause May Be Found in The Neck

Although the neck and the inner ear may not appear related on the surface, the fact is that the inner ear is actually in close proximity to the topmost vertebrae in the spine.  Particularly applicable to those who developed their Meniere’s disease symptoms after some type of head or neck injury, a misalignment of the atlas vertebra might be at the root of the problem.  Your atlas vertebra provides a ring of protection around the brainstem, which is responsible for relaying signals to and from the brain.  In combination with sensors in the inner ear, this is part of the system that controls your body’s sense of balance.  A misalignment of the atlas can interfere with these signals, leading to vertigo.

At Schrier Family Chiropractic, our focus is on upper cervical chiropractic care.  We utilize the NUCCA technique, which is a precise and gentle way of correcting atlas misalignments.  By customizing our adjustments for each patient’s particular needs, we are able to restore normal atlas alignment.  This will relieve pressure from the brainstem and allow for normal function to return.  It can lead to the reduction in the severity or frequency of Meniere’s disease attacks, including the debilitating vertigo episodes.
