Suffer from Fibromyalgia? – The Medical Approach and General Chiropractic May Not Be Enough

Can Fibromyalgia be Caused by a Car Accident?

There is a very interesting case of a 45-year-old female, presented by Dr. Nimira Alibhoy DC, in the June 2011 Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. This patient had a history of two head traumas and ten car accidents leading up to the complaints of an eleven-year history of fibromyalgia.

The patient’s symptoms were sciatica, numbness in her fingers, migraine headaches, right knee pain, chronic pain in the neck and upper and lower back, duodenal cancer, and depression. At the age of 15, she drove headfirst into a shallow pool, which caused a traumatic injury. Over the next 25 years, she was in 10 additional car accidents. Her medical doctor later diagnosed her with fibromyalgia.

She fell headfirst down a flight of stairs five years later, causing another traumatic head injury. This significantly increased her neck, back, and sciatic pain.

Over a 12 year period, she found some temporary relief by visiting five general chiropractors. However, she still suffered from depression and chronic pain. Because of her pain and soft tissue injuries, she was given various medications at different times including Vicodin, Soma, and Flexeril. Her activities were so limited that she had to use a wheelchair to perform her daily routine. This helped preserve her energy. She could not swim, walk more than 20 feet, or use the stairs.

Are All Chiropractors the Same?

The simple answer is no. If you have a history of head or neck trauma it should always be analyzed by an Upper Cervical Chiropractor trained in the correction of Atlas Subluxation Complex (a misalignment of the top bone in the neck), such as Dr. Elan Schrier of Delray Beach, Florida. This type of misalignment can cause brain stem dysfunction that, in turn, can cause changes in the way various bodily systems work. The key connection in patients with fibromyalgia is the way the brain stem connects with the digestive system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, and the immune system. Also, the relation of the brain stem to the postural muscles up and down the spinal column plays an important role.

Results of the Case Above

Once she was able to get the proper upper cervical chiropractic care needed to correct the underlying Brain Stem Subluxation, she was no longer in need of using a wheelchair. Her left leg sciatica and her fibromyalgia had resolved by her first re-evaluation. She had more energy and felt more relaxed during the day. She was comfortable sleeping in any position. She was able to perform her basic daily functions. She came off all medications and reported that her right leg sciatica had improved around 60%.

Her headaches and chronic back pain had resolved by her second re-evaluation. Her right leg sciatica was minor at this point.

At her fifth re-evaluation, only six months into her care, her sciatica was 98% improved, and her right knee soreness had resolved. She no longer needed Tylenol or Advil to swim, walk long distances, or stand for long periods. She was able to do yard and house work. Her only complaint was right hip pain.
