Vertigo can be very debilitating. Many times, it is frustrating to sufferers when they can’t find a solution. Daily activities like driving, and working become difficult. Anxiety, and depression are common side effects. Vertigo sufferers may seem normal to people on the outside, but inside there is struggle going on. Vertigo many times is can be triggered by changing the position of the head. Some of the common sensations are (1):
- Pulled to one direction
- Ringing in the ears or hearing loss
There are different types of vertigo which include:(2)
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV)
- Vestibular neuronitis
- Meniere’s Disease
Some of the traditional treatments include hospitalization, and medication. While sometimes these steps are necessary to treat the severe symptoms, many times the underlying cause is not addressed, and lingering symptoms continue or become chronic.
When the brain stem, nervous system, eyes, or ears are not working properly vertigo and dizziness symptoms may result. At Schrier Family Chiropractic of Delray Beach we are dedicated to getting you back to your life, and enjoying your normal activities. We work with vertigo patients on correcting the underlying cause so your body can get back to balance.
Your neck and vertigo
One of the most important balance centers in your body is at the brainstem level, in the upper neck. This are of nerves tells your body where you are in space. If these nerves become irritated, signals going in and out are affected and vertigo symptoms can appear. The brainstem is located at the atlas/C1 level in the upper neck, which is vulnerable to misalign due the large range of motion of the neck.
A research paper in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research, Health Outcomes Following Cervical Specific Protocol in 300 Patients with Meniere’s Followed Over Six Years ,(3) followed 300 vertigo and Meniere’s sufferers over six years. At the beginning of the study the average symptom level was 8.5 out of 10. After six weeks post treatment the average was down to 3.0, after one year 2.0, and eventually and improvement of over 90%. Overall 97% claimed a dramatic improvement in vertigo.
Dr. Elan is trained in upper cervical chiropractic, a chiropractic technique that specializes in correction of upper cervical atlas misalignments. Through careful measurement, analysis and correction of the atlas, pressure is removed from the brain stem and vertigo symptoms many times subside. Dr. Elan also collaborates with other MD’s and PT’s in the area when necessary.
