Childhood Pain May Turn Into Adult Fibromyalgia

Many people hope or are even told that the pain their child is dealing with will eventually disappear as they grow older. However, research indicates the opposite may be true. A study performed at the University of Michigan found that one in six new adult pain patients also reported having chronic pain as a child. The symptoms they were showing were consistent with fibromyalgia. Their pain seemed to be more widespread and neuropathic in nature.

What are some symptoms that young people may experience that can indicate they may be heading toward a diagnosis of fibromyalgia?

Tender points throughout the body

Pain described as burning, aching, tightness, stiffness, or tenderness

Extreme tiredness, but not able to sleep

Depression and feelings of anxiousness

Feeling unbalanced or dizzy

Legs being unsettled while sleeping

Hard time concentrating or remembering things

Is there any way to help a child suffering from these symptoms? Upper cervical chiropractic care has seen positive results. The focus of our treatment is on helping people find relief from chronic pain by maintaining the health of the spine. Many times, a trauma that was caused at some point to the person’s neck area can lead to symptoms that may not show up for many years.

Our method focuses on decreasing irritation to the nerves in the spinal cord and brainstem. Often, these nerves are responsible for pain, tiredness, and neurological problems. What could have caused a child to have trauma to their neck? One trauma often seen happens during the birthing process (C-sections, using forceps, and even doctor assisted births). Other traumas include falling while taking first steps, bicycle accidents, sports injuries, and similar things to these.

We will examine each patient to see exactly where their misalignment lies and tailor their treatment plan to fit them individually. No child should have to experience pain.
