Upper Cervical Misalignment
The chiropractic field is known for correcting spinal misalignments. Upper cervical care is an area of expertise within the chiropractic field that focuses on correcting misalignments in the upper neck that can cause widespread dysfunction and pain in the body including all the way down the spine to the mid and low back.
The upper cervical spine is a very unique structure. Nerve signals traveling to and from the brain pass through the hole at the bottom of the skull and through the atlas bone (the top bone of the spine) before branching throughout the various areas of the body. These nerve signals carry vital information for the proper function of the body. The nerves that travel through the upper cervical spine need to be free of any interference that could alter or block signals from getting through clearly.
There are some key features of the upper cervical spine that make it the primary focus of Schrier Family Chiropractic. The upper cervical spine is the main opening in which the nerves from the brain pass through to the entire body, almost like the fuse box of the body. The upper cervical spine has direct contact with blood vessels that bring blood to and from the brain. The muscles of the upper neck are the most sensitive in the entire body for controlling posture. This region is also the junction point for the flow of cerebral spinal fluid between the brain and the spinal cord.
The craniocervical junction (the joint between the skull and the atlas) is much less stable than the rest of the spine due to smaller supporting ligaments and the lack of spinal discs. This design allows for greater movement of the head in every direction, but leaves that joint less stable and much more susceptible to injury or misalignment with falls, concussions, head injuries, chronic poor posture and accidents. One of the leading causes of upper neck misalignment is the forceful nature of modern medical birth.
If an individual has a misalignment of the upper cervical spine, the symptoms may vary greatly. Some people have subtle symptoms like slight posture changes, difficulty sleeping, brain fog or mild headaches. Others may have severe conditions develop over long periods of time such as migraines, vertigo, TMJ, sciatica or disc herniations. Even though symptoms vary person to person, there are consistent changes that occur in the body when there is a craniacervical junction misalignment including posture distortions, chronic stress response, blood flow problems to through brain, and pressure on very sensitive nerves.
Each one of these individual or combined changes can produce a variety of problems with the function of the body. Often, these functional changes will be diagnosed and treated medically without defining the root cause of the problem within the body. These changes commonly arise from misalignment of the upper cervical spine.
NUCCA and Blair Upper Cervical Technique
If an upper cervical misalignment is present, precise steps must be taken to correct the misalignment and restore normal function. The NUCCA and Blair techniques are procedures used by Dr. Elan are cutting-edge systems of analysis and correction of misalignment in upper cervical spine. Only 250 doctors in the world are trained in this unique type of spinal care. The NUCCA and Blair procedures are known as some of the most gentle and precise forms of chiropractic care available.
Using 3-dimentional Cone Bean CT analysis, Dr. Elan carefully measures the position the upper neck bones. These advanced measurements tell Dr. Schrier exactly where and how these bones need to move to restore the balance of the spine and body. Once these measurements are established, a correction can be made. During the correction, the patient is placed on their side on a specialized adjusting table with the head carefully supported. The NUCCA or Blair adjustment is performed by Dr. Schrier where he applies a pressure on the side of the neck along a specific angle calculated from the CT scan. It is extremely gentle, and there is NO twisting cracking or popping as seen in general chiropractic techniques. This applied force repositions the bones of the upper neck, restoring balance to the spine and function to the body.
The results are astounding. When your spine is in the right alignment, nerve communication between the brain and body increases, the body begin to heal, and the spine begins to strengthen. These improvements allow patients to do things they have not done in years. People often travel hours to see us, and are glad they did.
